Make An Ultimate Volcano Eruption Elephant Tooth Paste Style!

Now that you have their permission it’s time to create science awesomeness!  So how does this experiment work anyway? Let’s take a look at the ingredients and the science that makes this experiment work.

Hydrogen Peroxide, Dish Soap and Potassium Iodide, A Catalyst for Foamy Fun!

For this experiment our three key ingredients are hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and potassium iodide because all three work together to produce “explosive” results.

Sweet!  So, How Do I Make An "Ultimate Volcano Eruption?"

This is where it gets fun!  Now it's time to mix a bit of science with volcano exploding epicness.  To make your own volcano, we will need to combine a few ingredients...

To Make an "Ultimate Eruption" You Will Need The Following Ingredients!

1. A Tall Cylinder Vase.
2. Hydrogen Peroxide (we used 35 percent Hydrogen Peroxide, however that can be dangerous if not handled with care, so we recommend 3% peroxide).
   
3. Food Coloring For Fun.
4. Lots of Dish Soap!.
5. Potassium Iodide or Dry Yeast

How Do These  Ingredients Work Together for the “Ultimate Explosion”?

Concentrated (35%) hydrogen peroxide is first mixed with liquid soap and food coloring...this will make our eruption extra colorful and fun!  Next, we have to add what is called a catalyst (this helps to get the ingredients going to create our reaction) which in this case is potassium iodide (you can also use dry yeast).  This is added to make the hydrogen peroxide break down very quickly into oxygen and water.

Once broken down, the oxygen quickly pushes out of the container.  The soapy water then traps the oxygen, creating bubbles that explode!  This foamy mixture will not only explode out of your container, but it will create a reaction called an Exothermic Reaction – that means it not only created foam, it created heat!  How’s that for an “Ultimate Eruption!”
